Depression can affect the results of an IQ test?
I was just wondering if a person with depression took an IQ test results would that person to be accurate?
I am a student of post-graduate training to be a neuropsychologist (the branch of psychology that specializes in evaluation, as well as other things). The truth is: Not really. Assuming small to moderate depression, there may be some minor effects, but not really would be significant enough to radically change the score. However, I had the pleasure of testing several clients with severe depression (as huspitalized, and can not leave the double depression), and their results are much more affected. Depression is very motivationally oriented, and an interesting thing happens when someone test with depression. The more they are challenged, the better they do (in his personal capacity). Good IQ tests get progressively more difficult each question, then they tend doing okay after a few questions, and end up doing about the same as them if they were not depressed.
