Anyone who has taken prescription drugs for the treatment of panic attack or other anxiety disorders or someone who just read the long list and alarming possible side effects associated with these drugs, probably want to know if a cure for panic attacks like this can not be worse than the disease. Nausea, weight gain, sexual dysfunction, sedation, nervousness and irritability, and withdrawal syndromes are very common. Some medicines can even make your anxiety worse before it gets better. These are not minor inconveniences, and the fear of them can be a significant factor in preventing people seeking treatment for their disease.

This is unfortunate, because the fact is that there are many "natural" forms of treatment for people suffering from panic attacks and panic disorder. The number of an approach to panic disorder recommended by mental health professionals is clearly cognitive-behavioral therapy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy on their own, without the use of drugs, has reached success rates of 65% or more in patients who suffer from panic disorder and agoraphobia. When combined with chemotherapy soon, it can be even more successful.

Already in 1993 some researchers studied a group of patients who had been treated for panic disorder with a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication limitation, specifically, anti-anxiety drug alprazolam. One year after the end of their program of combined treatment, 75 percent of the study group were not taking new drugs and 86 percent were no longer experiencing panic attacks. The long-term success rates were in fact "far superior" to those reported in patients treated with medication alone.

So what exactly is the cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)? CBT is a combination of techniques cognitive restructuring with behavioral modification techniques. In other words, it aims to understand and change the way your mind contributes to panic attacks (which is the cognitive part) and also learn some new physical behavior to control or neutralize the reaction of panic. The main tools used in CBT include:

 »Educate patients about how their minds and work processes of thought.
 »Teaching suffer from panic to recognize and control their symptoms during an attack.
 »Training in breathing techniques and relaxation.
 »Restructuring answers mental to the thoughts and feelings that trigger their attacks.
 »Expose them under controlled conditions to situations, places or feelings associated with episodes of panic.

CBT requires the active participation of a trained counselor or therapist and also the active participation of the patient. In this regard, it is actually more demanding than just taking a daily pill to ward off the attacks. But the initial therapy is usually quite short (12 to 15 weeks) and the pay-off is the long term.

Not surprisingly, many people are looking for more natural ways to deal with, treat, and possibly even cure their diseases. Many methods in addition to CBT were suggested to deal with panic attacks without drugs, including hypnosis, energy therapy, laughter therapy, therapy conversation, acupuncture and beating. All these may work for some people. But what research shows works more reliable is the cognitive behavioral therapy. So much that this natural approach to treating panic disorder is now the first choice for many physicians and psychologists and their patients.
